Salers cattle originate from the mountainous southern Massif Central in the Auvergne region of France. They were at one time kept for meat, milked to make cheese and used as draught animals.
They are a beautiful red/brown colour but a few are black and their coat although smooth during the summer, becomes thick and curly in the winter which along with good legs and feet allows them to live happily outside all year round.
Calving is particularly easy for Salers cows because they have a roomy pelvis coupled with producing a long slim calf. It is so stress free the calves get up quickly and suck by themselves and their mothers live long and productive lives, easily calving firstly at two years of age and carrying on well into their teen years. They are milky mothers too, able to wean a heavy calf off poorer quality grazing and forages.
Salers females and their crosses are much in demand as “easy care” suckler replacements and Salers bulls are popular for crossing with commercial and dairy heifers to avoid calving problems.
Finally Salers produces top quality beef which is well received by butchers because of its continental carcass formation but with traditional marbling.
