Derrick & I are not farmers in the conventional sense of the word but back in 2005 we found ourselves needing to keep cattle to graze rough hill pasture, designated wetlands and species rich grass fields.

Never being ones to shy away from a challenge we set about finding a breed that:

·Could calve strong healthy calves unaided, a priority because we had never looked after cattle before and this terrified us!
·Low maintenance and required low running costs.
·Hardy enough to live out all year round in the often harsh environment of a Scottish hill farm.
·Able to survive and rear a heavy calf off poorer grazing which would sell well at market.

Our search led us to Salers cattle and it has been a steep learning curve for us but our choice of breed has proved to be everything we hoped for and much more.

We have developed a particular interest in producing Salers cattle without horns (POLLED). Many of our females are polled and we use polled stock bulls. Polled animals are still unsual within the Salers herd.

Visitors are always welcome at Mains of Callander to see our heifers and young bulls that are for sale or even just to learn more about the breed. We sell direct from the farm if we can. This is good for purchasers too because this avoids picking up infections at a busy market.
